Banque Populaire VIII - Imoca 60'
Instead of focusing on versatility we decided to concentrate on designing a boat that offered important gains for 60% of the time, and minimal losses for 20%. This resulted in a bulkier bow section, a powerful hull combined with a considerable righting moment, and the addition of foils. When the keel is canted to windward its fin generates lift and, to counteract the heeling force and to compensate for the loss of power, foils generate vertical thrust. The boat won't have more energy but she'll be sailing lighter, with a smaller wetted area thanks to the lift contributed by the appendages.
